The number is four numbers.

Every scan comes back split into the four things that decide whether a resume clears a posting, each with its own sub-score and a line explaining it — so you know which part to fix first instead of guessing at the total.

Example breakdownOverall72
Keyword Match
64
Which of the skills, tools and qualifications the posting names actually appear in your resume — and whether they sit inside a real experience bullet or only in the skills list at the bottom.
Job Fit
80
Whether your titles and years line up with what the role asks for. A senior posting read against a two-year resume scores low here even when every keyword matches.
Content Impact
68
Whether your bullets describe outcomes or duties. “Responsible for reporting” and “Cut monthly close from 9 days to 4” cover the same job; one of them survives a skim.
Format & Readability
76
Whether the file parses — single column, standard headers, nothing trapped in a table, a text box or the page header where an ATS drops it on import.

Plus six pass/fail checks that run whether or not you paste a job description, because they break your resume everywhere rather than for one posting: Skills section · Education section · Grammar & spelling · Contact info · Quantified achievements · Formatting & parseability.

Where you land, and what to do about it.

Half the scale is the same instruction — stop and find out why. The advice only gets specific above 50.

Read the reason before rewriting

Either the resume is a genuine mismatch for this role, or the file never parsed — a two-column template, a text box, a name stranded in the page header. Check the formatting verdict first: a parsing failure and a bad match produce the same low number.

Worth twenty minutes

The fit is real, the wording is not. This is where the score moves most for the least work — put the posting's own phrasing into the bullets where you already did that work, and add the missing skills you can honestly claim.

Titles, skills and experience line up and the file reads cleanly. Add anything still listed as missing that is genuinely true of you, then send it. Chasing 95 costs an hour and buys nothing.

The score rates this resume against this posting. It is not a rating of you, and the same file will score differently against two jobs with the same title.

What the software on the other side is doing.

Most mid-size and large employers collect applications through an applicant tracking system — Workday, Greenhouse, Lever, Taleo and a few dozen others. When you upload a file, it does not read the way a person reads. It converts the document to text, works out which block is your work history and which is your education, and files the result as structured fields.

That conversion is where resumes quietly lose. Text inside a table cell, a two-column template, a name placed in the page header, a skills bar rendered as an image — any of it can arrive blank or scrambled. Nothing tells you it happened. The application just performs worse than it should, and you conclude the market is brutal.

What comes next is less dramatic than the internet suggests. Systems rarely auto-reject on a score; recruiters search and filter. They query the pool for the skills the role needs, sort by title and recency, and read the top of that list. If the posting says Kubernetes and your resume says container orchestration, you were not rejected — you were never in the results.

That gap is what this page measures: which of the posting's terms you already cover, which you are missing, and whether the file survives parsing at all — the three things you cannot see from your side of the form.

One rule worth keeping: add a keyword only if it is true of you. Stuffing gets you past the filter and into a screening call you cannot hold up in. Longer version in what an ATS actually is and ATS-friendly resume format.
