The reliable default for an advertised role. Amber = swap in your own details.
The amber parts are examples - swap them for your own details. Single-column, standard headings - kept ATS-friendly on purpose.
The cover letter that gets read is not a longer version of the resume - it answers the one question the resume raises and cannot address. Sometimes that is why you are changing industries, sometimes why you want this company specifically, sometimes what the two-year gap was. These are starting structures for the situations that actually need explaining.
Making a cover letter worth the reader's minute
Do not narrate the resume they already have
"As you can see from my resume, I spent three years at..." spends the opening telling them something they can read below. Start with the reason you are writing that the resume cannot supply on its own.
Name something only this company has
A letter that would work unchanged for any employer in the sector reads exactly that way. One specific sentence - their product, a decision they made, the market they are in - is the difference between addressed and mail-merged.
Two hundred and fifty to three hundred and fifty words
Three or four short paragraphs. A full page of prose does not get read when the recruiter has ninety more applications, and length is not read as effort.
Address the obvious problem before they wonder
A gap, a career change, applying from another city. One plain sentence handles it. Leaving it unmentioned does not make it invisible - it makes it the reader's open question.
