Summary Generator

The professional summary is the only part of a resume you write about yourself rather than about a job you held, which is why most of them collapse into adjectives. Its real job is narrow: tell the reader what you are now, at what level, and what you want next - especially when your job titles do not make that obvious on their own.

When a summary earns its space, and when to delete it

Write it for the job you are applying to, not the one you left

A summary that describes your last role duplicates the experience section directly beneath it. The version that works names the role you are targeting and the two or three things from your background that qualify you for it.

Adjectives are invisible; specifics are not

Hardworking, detail-oriented, passionate and team player appear on a majority of resumes and are therefore read as noise. "Six years in B2B SaaS support, moved to solutions engineering in 2024" says more in one line than a paragraph of qualities.

Three lines is the ceiling

A summary long enough to be a paragraph will not be read, because the reader's eye is already heading for the job titles. If it runs past three lines, the extra sentences belong in your bullets.

Skip it entirely if your titles already tell the story

Someone who has been a nurse for eight years applying to be a nurse does not need a summary explaining that. Career changers, people returning after a break, and anyone whose titles do not match the target role are the ones who genuinely need it.

Questions

Good to know.

Summary. An objective describes what you want from an employer, which is not what a hiring manager is scanning for. A summary describes what you bring. The objective format has largely disappeared from professional resumes.
