An applicant tracking system does not read your resume the way a person does. A recruiter searches it for terms taken from the job description, and a resume that describes the same skill in different words does not come back in that search. Using extracted keywords without wrecking your resume
Match the posting's exact word, not your synonym
If the posting says observability and your resume says monitoring, a recruiter searching "observability" will not find you - the two are the same idea and different strings. Where both are true of you, use theirs.
Keywords go inside a sentence that proves them
A block of comma-separated terms at the bottom of a resume gets skimmed past by the human and increasingly discounted by the system. "Rebuilt the reporting pipeline in Python and Airflow" places two keywords and evidence for both.
Ignore the bottom third of most postings
Equal opportunity statements, benefits, and company boilerplate produce terms that look important and match nothing a recruiter would search. The requirements and responsibilities sections are where the real vocabulary lives.
Separate must-have from nice-to-have before you panic
Postings routinely list a dozen technologies where three are genuinely required. Missing something under "bonus if you have" is not a reason to skip the application, and it is definitely not a reason to claim a skill you lack.
