Resume length is the argument nobody wins, mostly because people argue about pages while recruiters experience density. This counts words, characters and reading time so you can check the real numbers - including against the character limits that application forms impose without telling you.
The numbers worth checking before you send
The page count follows from the word count
A one-page resume is roughly 400 to 600 words at a readable size. If you are at 900 and still insisting on one page, you have not shortened anything - you have shrunk the font and removed the white space that makes it scannable.
Two pages is fine after about ten years
Below that, one page is the expectation in most markets and a second page reads as padding. Above it, forcing a decade of work onto one page costs you the detail that makes you look senior. Almost nobody needs three.
Keep bullets between fifteen and twenty-five words
Under fifteen and the bullet usually has no result in it. Over twenty-five and it wraps to a third line, which is where eyes stop. Paste a single bullet in here when one looks visually heavy on the page.
Application forms have character limits you cannot see
Workday, Greenhouse and Lever text boxes silently truncate. If you are pasting a summary or a cover letter into a form, check the character count first rather than discovering the cut mid-sentence after submitting.
