Your LinkedIn headline follows your name into every search result, comment and message a recruiter ever sees, and it defaults to your current job title - which is the least useful thing it could say. It is 220 characters of searchable text, and most people spend fewer than thirty of them.
What to put in 220 characters
Recruiters search this field, so it needs the words they type
LinkedIn Recruiter weights the headline heavily. If you want product manager roles, "Product Manager" has to appear as those words - not as "turning ideas into shipped things," which matches no search anyone runs.
Role, then specialism, then proof
"Senior Backend Engineer" is searchable but generic. "Senior Backend Engineer · Go, Kubernetes · scaled payments to 2M req/day" is searchable and gives a reason to click. The separator character costs one character and buys structure.
Do not type Open to Work into the headline
LinkedIn has a dedicated setting that signals this to recruiters without spending your searchable characters, and without it appearing on every comment you leave. Typing it manually does both.
Aim at the next role, not the current one
If you are a senior analyst targeting analytics engineering, the headline can carry both. Describing only where you are now means you only appear in searches for where you are now.
