A resignation letter is a formality with one job: create a dated record that you resigned and when you are leaving. It is not where you explain, negotiate, or settle anything. The short, warm, boring version is the professional one, and it is the version that gets you a usable reference two years from now.
What belongs in it and what does not
Name the last working day, not the notice period
"Effective two weeks from today" creates an argument about which day that is. A date does not. This is the single most important line in the letter and the reason the letter exists at all.
Do not put your reasons in writing
Whatever is driving you out - the manager, the pay, the reorganisation - the letter is filed permanently and read by people you have not met. Say what you want in the exit conversation. Keep it out of the document.
Tell your manager first, in person
The letter confirms a conversation that has already happened. A manager who learns you are leaving from an HR forwarded email is a manager who remembers it, and the reference call comes later.
Offer help with the handover, briefly
One sentence about documenting your work or training a replacement costs you nothing and is most of what people remember about how you left. Do not offer more than you will actually deliver.
