Most resume templates you find online are designed to look good in a portfolio, not to survive being parsed. Two columns, a sidebar of skill bars, a header block with your contact details in it - each of those is a normal design choice and a known way to have your resume read back in the wrong order. These are plain on purpose.
Why the boring layout is the correct one
Single column, always
A parser reads a page left to right, top to bottom. In a two-column layout that interleaves your sidebar with your job history, so your skills land in the middle of a role description. This is the single most common way a good resume produces a garbled profile.
No tables, text boxes or headers
Content inside a table cell, a text box, or the document header region is frequently dropped entirely. Putting your name and phone number in the Word header is how people end up with an application that has no contact details.
Use the section names the system expects
Experience, Education, Skills. Not "Where I've Been" or "My Journey." Parsers match on standard headings to decide what each block is, and a creative heading turns a section into unlabelled text.
Send PDF unless the posting says otherwise
PDF preserves your layout and is parsed reliably by every current system. Send DOCX when the application explicitly asks for it - some older systems still do, and a few recruiters edit the file before passing it on.
