Gross pay before taxes. Adjust hours and weeks for part-time or contract schedules.

Job postings quote pay in whichever unit suits them - hourly for shift work, monthly in much of Asia and Europe, annual in the US - which makes two offers genuinely hard to compare. This converts between hourly, daily, weekly, monthly and yearly so you are comparing the same number.

Comparing offers that are quoted differently

The annual figure assumes 2,080 hours

That is 40 hours across 52 weeks, the standard basis for hourly-to-annual conversion. If you work 35-hour weeks or take unpaid leave, your real annual is lower than the arithmetic suggests.

A month is not four weeks

It averages about 4.33, so multiplying a weekly rate by four understates annual pay by roughly a month's worth. This is the most common error in comparing a weekly-quoted job against a monthly-quoted one.

A contractor rate is not a salary

An hourly contract rate that looks higher than a salaried equivalent still has to cover your own leave, sick days, insurance and often equipment. Comparing the headline numbers directly makes contracting look better than it is.

Convert total compensation, not just base

Bonus, employer retirement contributions, allowances and equity can move the real number substantially. Two offers with identical base pay routinely differ by a wide margin once everything is counted.
